The inspiration and passion reinvent the hairdressing experience came from discovering that people universally dislike the same traits about hair salons and combined with an unexpected Eureka moment in a bar, we knew there had to be a better way.
22 years ago, after returning from travelling and working in a wine bar in Tunbridge Wells, Amanda noticed that outside of the hair salon in a relaxed environment, women would open up in several ways...
Firstly, nearly all women shared their same dislikes in their typical hair salon experiences; confusing price systems and escalating service charges, the lack of privacy sitting shoulder-to-shoulder with strangers, being passed between several stylists and juniors like being on a conveyor belt amongst many other things.
The second way was most unexpected. One evening, while chatting with a customer about bad hair experiences, Amanda spontaneously invited the woman for a haircut upstairs. Over a glass of wine they discussed how she ‘wanted to feel’, and from this conversation, Amanda quickly created the perfect style while gaining important insights. An inviting ambience, coupled with a relaxed discussion, removed fear and replaced it with trust – leading to a fantastic result.
With these discoveries, 1 year later we opened our first salon - with one-to-one attention from stylists to guests, we created a separate calm space with sofas to have a relaxed conversation for 10-15 minutes to build trust and an understanding of how to find the perfect authentic hairstyle, all chairs facing 90 degrees from the wall for an open-space ambience yet still feeling private, and crucially, we charged by time.
The team decided to take a fresh look at how hair services were charged for and the first realisation was that hairdressing price lists are more often than not super-complicated, the second was that nobody really understood what they meant.
Nearly 20 years later and Kantar’s Worldpanel Research still finds as recently as 2015 that the biggest jar for many people with their hairdressing experience was not knowing how much it was going to cost and the trepidation of walking up to pay at the end.
Our stylists do not have to justify their services through a prescribed price list (i.e half-head of highlights OR Root tint OR all over tint) they are free to unleash their creativity and work with their guest to create a bespoke look and can use any of the products at their disposal to create the best possible tailored result without worrying about additional costs and charges. With no more 45-minute rushed appointments it also means our stylists can ensure you get the best hair possible, not the fastest hair possible.
So how does it work? Our stylists each have a by the hour charge from £50 upwards and segments of time in 15-minute increments are discussed with you before making the appointment, that way you already know exactly what the bill will be before coming through the door and there are no nasty surprises at the end of the service. We’ll only ever charge less than quoted, never more.
