Many women find it challenging to keep their naturally wavy hair straight; sometimes all it takes is to step outside into the damp air for hair to begin to curl! The good news is that there are a number of things that you can do to keep your hair stay straight all day long, beginning when washing your hair through to styling. Below we offer some hints and tips on how to keep your hair straight.

Choice of shampoo and conditioner

There are many shampoos and conditioners on the market that can help to straighten your hair. When buying shampoo, look for words such as 'sleek' and 'smooth', plus ingredients such as wheat protein and added vitamins. It is also very important to comb through the conditioner with a wide tooth comb to avoid tangles, which can help when straightening your hair.

Gently towel dry your hair

The way in which you dry your hair can also help you to better manage your hair and achieve that desired straight look. When drying your hair, try to pat your hair dry and avoid rubbing your hair as this will help to avoid any frizz. Depending on your hair type, a microfiber towel can also be a good investment.

Straightening hair care products

There are various products out there that can help you straighten your hair when drying and styling, for example, a straightening serum or balm is easy to use and will help to nourish your hair. Simply work a small amount thoroughly into your damp hair before drying.

Styling mousse is also an option that can also give volume to fine hair - work through from root to tip and gently dry. Anti-frizz styling products contain silicone and can help you to create smooth straight hair. These products can be applied to dry or damp hair.

Dry hair on low heat

When using a hairdryer it is always best to dry on the lowest heat. Drying on a cool heat will help to reduce any frizz. Drying will take a little longer but it's worth it to achieve smoother and straighter hair. Another good tip is to move the hairdryer gently from side to side when drying, rather than focusing on one area, as this will help to prevent any damage and reduce frizz.

Using hair straighteners

Hair straighteners are a great styling tool, but there are a few useful tips to follow when using them. It's best to use a straightener that consists of ceramic plates as these reduce frizz as you straighten, as your hair is not pulled too tightly. Before drying you should also apply a protective styling spray to your hair to provide a barrier against the high heat. When styling, only use small sections at a time rather than large sections of hair, as it makes the whole process much easier.
