There's no doubt about it, curly hair is amazing; curls give your hair volume that you spend hours teasing into straight hair. However, not all of us were blessed with naturally curly hair so we can only embrace the euphoria of having coily locks until it inevitably falls flat. Luckily, there are certain measures you can take to make your hair hold its curl for longer; follow these tips and you'll still be rocking the bouncy hair for days to come.

Start in the shower

You might think that the secret to curl longevity lies in the curling tongs you use, but this isn't strictly the case; a great curl day actually begins when you wash your hair. When you're aiming for a sleek and straight hair do, hair conditioner is your best friend, but the opposite is true when you want long lasting curls. Use conditioner sparingly as doing this will give your hair more texture and grip that is likely to last throughout the night.

Use curl-boosting hair products

The next time you go shopping, look for products that are tailored specifically to curly hair. Start with a hair oil that will nourish your strands and prepare them for the heat tools that will come later. Hair mousse is a lifesaver when it comes to making beautiful waves as it makes curls look more defined while also giving them a great amount of lift and volume; apply a generous amount of the mousse to your hair, tilting your head upside down and scrunching it into your strands if you want even more volume. Lastly, spritz a generous amount of heat defence spray to your hair; this won't help with the curl longevity but it will keep your locks looking healthy instead of heat damaged.

It's all about those heat tools

Dry your hair as normal, or use a diffuser if you're hoping for more voluminous curls, but ensure that your hair is completely dry before moving onto the next step. Using your favourite curling iron on a high heat, wrap hair around the wand for around ten seconds before gently unravelling it. Before your hair cools down, give the strand a generous spritz of hair spray, then pin the curl to your head using a hair grip. Repeat this until your entire head of hair is pinned to your head, alternating curling tong sizes if you're aiming for a more natural look.

Patience is key

The secret to long-lasting curls is patience. While your curls are pinned down, allow yourself time to relax; get started on your makeup or even pour yourself a glass of wine while your hair completely cools. After fifteen minutes, gently unpin all of the curls and tousle them with your fingers. Curls will always drop a small amount, so it's important to leave your hair a little curlier than you think. Finally, give your curly mane a final spritz of hairspray and look forward to a full day of bouncy ringlets.
